General Outram and his wife, along with friends, find themselves in a forest when lightning illuminates an ancient castle nearby. The General's wife tells the story of the castle and its owner, James Meyer, who after the death of his closest friend Maurice broke off his engagement and withdrew to the castle as a recluse. Father Brown becomes intrigued by the story and begins his investigation.
