R. Austin Freeman (1862–1943)—a British writer renowned for inventing the 'inverted detective novel,' in which the crime is fully described and the criminal identified at the outset, then the investigation process is revealed. Born in London, he studied pharmacy and medicine at Middlesex Hospital. His main character is forensic pathologist Dr. Thorndyke, whose first stories were published in 1907.
