The story of one of the most remarkable women in the Islamic world—Shagaret al-Durr, the first and only queen of Egypt after the Islamic conquest. Her reign marked a turning point between the Ayyubid and Mamluk dynasties, a period when the Crusaders were defeated and the Mongol invasions began. Under her rule, the sacred pilgrimage procession to Mecca with the covering of the Kaaba was revived.
