Christine Clay, a gleaming Hollywood star, returns to England for a seaside holiday where she meets her death. At first it appears to be an accident, but police discover it is deliberate murder. Suspicion falls on young Robert Tisdall, who flees. Erica, the police commissioner's daughter, tries to help him prove his innocence, while an inspector undertakes his own investigation.
